The best AI for consistent characters in animation

Short answer

Tools keep a character consistent in one of two ways. Rigged or template characters (Vyond, Animaker, Powtoon, Krikey AI) are the same puppet every time, so they never drift but look like the tool’s style. Generative tools save a character as a reference and reuse it (StudioRam, Anijam, Atlabs), so you can use your own design or a photo, and you should test them across several scenes.

See it: one cast, many scenes

The first clip was made in the StudioRam app and is also shown on our homepage. The second is a demo made by the StudioRam team. In both, watch the face, clothes and small details hold from shot to shot.

Made in StudioRam: Multi-shot bar scene (1:03, no sound). The same character across 8 shots, from a rainy street to a seat at the bar.
Made by the StudioRam team: The rooftop courier (0:20, with sound; unmute to hear it). A silver-haired courier in a red scarf runs across rooftops at sunset, hands over a small parcel in a rainy neon-lit alley, and leaps between towers under a full moon.

We make StudioRam, so read this with that in mind. We have not run side-by-side quality tests. This page compares what each company publishes about its own product, checked on 18 October 2026. Prices and features change, so check each site before you decide.

Why characters drift

Most AI video generators make each clip from scratch. Ask for “a girl with a red jacket” twice and you get two different girls. That is fine for one clip and fatal for a series, where the audience has to recognise the hero in every shot. Tools solve this in one of two ways.

Approach 1: rigged characters

Template animation tools give you characters that are built like puppets: the same drawing with movable parts. Because it is literally the same asset in every scene, the character cannot drift. The trade-off is style: your cast looks like the tool’s library, adjusted with its character builder. This suits explainers, training and marketing videos.

  • Vyond has template characters in several styles and a “Photo to Character” feature.
  • Animaker has a custom character builder: 2 characters on its free plan, 15 on Starter, 30 on Pro.
  • Powtoon has a Character Builder that saves custom characters to reuse, and full character customisation on its Advanced plan.
  • Krikey AI works with a library of 3D characters.

Approach 2: a saved reference that every scene reuses

Generative tools can draw any style, from a description, your own design or a photo. To keep a character the same, they save it once and feed it back as the reference for every new scene. This gives you a cast that is yours, at the cost of needing to check that it holds.

  • StudioRam saves a character once and reuses it as the reference in every scene it appears in. What happens next? starts the next scene on the last frame of the previous one, so cast, place and look carry over. You can preview the still look before you animate.
  • Anijam says it stores characters as “persistent project assets” and supports up to 4 characters in one scene.
  • Atlabs lists a consistent character library, with training your own characters on its Plus plan and up.

Which approach is right for you

Pick a rigged-character tool if you make explainers or training videos, need many minutes a month, and are happy with the library’s look. Pick a reference-based tool if your characters are your own designs (a mascot, a cast you drew, or yourself) and you are telling a story across episodes.

If you want to direct a story yourself one scene at a time and pay per scene, StudioRam is built for that. If you would rather an agent plan the whole episode, look at Anijam. We explain the full method in how to keep the same character in every episode.

A five-minute consistency test

  • Create one character with a distinctive detail: a scar, a patterned scarf, an unusual hair colour.
  • Make three scenes: indoors, outdoors at night, and a close-up.
  • Put a still from each side by side and check the face, the detail and the outfit.
  • Add a second character to one scene and see whether both hold.

Run the same test on each tool you are considering, on its free option, before you commit to a plan.

Questions

Which AI keeps characters the most consistent?

Rigged template characters (Vyond, Animaker, Powtoon) do not drift because they are the same asset each time, but they look like the tool’s library. For your own designs, reference-based tools such as StudioRam, Anijam and Atlabs reuse a saved character; test any of them across three scenes before you pay.

How does StudioRam keep a character the same?

You save a character once, from a description, your own design or a photo of yourself, and StudioRam reuses it as the reference in every scene it appears in. What happens next? starts the next scene on the last frame of the previous one, with the same cast, place and look.

Can I use a photo of myself as an animated character?

In StudioRam, yes: upload a photo of yourself and save it as a character. Vyond lists a Photo to Character feature, and Anijam accepts a reference image.

Can I keep two characters consistent in the same scene?

Anijam says it supports up to 4 characters in one scene. Template tools let you place several rigged characters. In any tool, test a two-character scene on the free option before you commit.
