A Vyond alternative for animated stories and series

Short answer

Vyond is a strong choice for training, HR and marketing video made by teams, with AI avatars and template characters; its Starter plan is $99 a month or $699 billed yearly. If you want your own character acting out a story across many short scenes, StudioRam is built for that and priced per scene ($4.00 to $5.99, packs never expire), with one free scene and no card. For cheaper template tools, look at Animaker or Powtoon.

The first clip was made in the StudioRam app and is also shown on our homepage. The second is a demo made by the StudioRam team. In both, watch the face, clothes and small details hold from shot to shot.

Made in StudioRam: Good Citizen (0:15, with voice and sound; unmute to hear it). A short made start to finish on StudioRam; the same character carries from the porch to the last shot.
Made by the StudioRam team: The Lantern Walker (0:29, with voice-over; unmute to hear it). A hooded traveller with a staff, a lantern and an owl walks through a dark forest, over a stone bridge, past a snowy village and on toward the mountains, told in illustrated stills with slow camera moves.

We make StudioRam, so read this with that in mind. We have not run side-by-side quality tests. This page compares what each company publishes about its own product, checked on 18 October 2026. Prices and features change, so check each site before you decide.

Why people look for a Vyond alternative

The usual reasons are price and fit. Vyond’s plans are priced per user for businesses, and its features (team collaboration, brand management, security suites, AI avatars, screen recording) are aimed at companies making workplace video. If you are a solo creator making a story series, a YouTube channel or a short film, you may be paying for features you will not use, and the template style may not match the look you want.

Pick Vyond if

  • You make training, onboarding or internal communication videos for a company.
  • You need long videos, team collaboration, brand controls or enterprise security.
  • You want AI avatars, screen recording and a large template library in one place.

Pick StudioRam if

  • You want your own character, or yourself, to act out a story across many scenes.
  • You publish a series (a YouTube channel, social shorts, a pilot) rather than workplace video.
  • You would rather pay per scene in packs that never expire, or $29 a month, than pay a per-user business plan.
  • You want to try one scene free, without a card.

Other Vyond alternatives

Animaker and Powtoon are also template-and-character tools for explainers, with lower starting prices: Animaker from $45 a month ($300 billed yearly) and Powtoon from $15 a month billed yearly. What switching looks like

StudioRam does not import Vyond projects; you start from your script. Save your main characters first (describe them, upload your own design, or use a photo), then make your first scene from a line of the script. Preview the still look before animating, which is cheaper than re-rendering video. Continue with What happens next? to build the story, then cut the scenes together in the built-in editor. See how it works.

Questions

Is there a cheaper alternative to Vyond?

For template explainer video, Animaker starts at $45 a month ($300 billed yearly) and Powtoon at $15 a month billed yearly. For a story series with your own characters, StudioRam charges $4.00 to $5.99 per scene in packs that never expire, or $29 a month on the Creator plan.

Can StudioRam make training videos like Vyond?

StudioRam makes short animated scenes with your characters and an AI voice, which you can use for a story-led explainer. It does not have Vyond’s screen recording, team collaboration, brand management or long-video templates, so for corporate training Vyond is the closer fit.

Does Vyond have a free plan?

Vyond offers a free trial with 2,000 credits to try most of its AI tools. Trial exports carry a watermark, which is removed when you upgrade.

Can I use my own character design in StudioRam?

Yes. Create a character from a description, upload your own design, or use a photo of yourself, then save it. StudioRam reuses it as the reference in every scene it appears in.
